Hot Chocolate, Don't Despair, This One's Made With Cashew Milk

Updated: Aug 31, 2018

When I woke up the other morning to snow, I knew I was going to need a little pick-me-up, well, warm-me-up. So, I whisked up my latest sweet obsession — Cashew Milk Hot Chocolate, as sometimes we just need a hot chocolate and this was the perfect, dairy free drink to warm me up. There’s also nothing that makes winter more “pleasing” than a warm cup of hot chocolate and Cashew Milk Hot Chocolate is the perfect drink for sipping on a long cold winters day.

Well first off — need I say more — hot chocolate!  It has been one of my favourite sweet treats on cold winter days ever since I was a child. But, more importantly as I am breastfeeding I needed to make it specifically dairy free as my baby has a cows milk protein allergy.

I was super excited at making a dairy free hot chocolate that is still rich and creamy. I mixed the unsweetened cashew milk with some unsweetened cocoa powder, maple syrup (or you can use any kind of sweetener), a splash of almond extract, and a pinch of cinnamon for extra flavour.

And the result?

It was super easy to make and it’s such a simple recipe it’s almost a non-recipe. The mildly nutty and creamy flavour worked really well as a hot chocolate. I couldn’t believe how amazing it tasted! A mug of hot chocolate yumminess, so rich, so decadent! I’m obsessed with this hot chocolate because it’s:

> easy to make

> and it gives me a cosy feeling! Mmmmmmm (it’s a delicious and flavourful way to warm up when it’s cold outside).

So, if you find yourself stuck with another cold winters day this year, or for any days you might just be craving a sweet and creamy treat. I highly recommend picking up a carton of cashew milk (or make your own) and giving this one a try!

So, here it is – my go – to cashew milk hot chocolate that’s way better (and healthier) than any packaged or boxed mix of hot chocolate you’ll find.

This Cashew Milk Hot Chocolate recipe is easy to make and wonderfully rich! Made with cashew milk and sweetened with maple syrup, this Cashew Milk Hot Chocolate is a special version of your favourite holiday beverage and it’s delicious.

It starts with simple ingredients:

3 cups of unsweetened cashew milk (or make your own!)

1 tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder

2 tablespoons maple syrup (or your desired sweetener), or more/less to taste

1 teaspoon almond extract (or vanilla, peppermint whichever you desire!)

pinch of ground cinnamon

optional toppings – coconut whipped cream, chopped dark dairy free chocolate (for extra chocolatey flavour), a pinch of coarse sea salt or nutmeg, and add as many as marshmallows as your heart desires!

Directions to creamy perfection is just 5 minutes away.

1. Heat the Cashew milk in a small saucepan over a low heat, stirring occasionally.

2. Add in the cocoa powder, maple syrup, almond extract and cinnamon, and whisk until combined and completely smooth.

3. Pour the warm hot chocolate into serving mugs and top with your desired toppings if desired.  Serve immediately (on its own or with banana cupcakes or any other dairy free dessert of your choice).

And there you have it Cashew Milk Hot Chocolate! I’m pretty positive it will make your day all the warmer and brighter. Thank you very much for making winter days more fun, cashew milk hot chocolate. But honestly, this hot chocolate recipe can be made and consumed no matter what the weather is like outside.

Do you ever use non-dairy milk substitutes? Would you try cashew milk?

Please let me know if you make this Cashew Milk Hot Chocolate and what you think! I hope you make it a lot this winter to keep warm. I’d love to see the finished product as well, so don’t forget to take a picture if you make it and tag me on Instagram.
